THE GRACIE'S

MARTIAL ARTS CONTRIBUTION

Conquering the World One Submission at  a Time

The Gracies, led by their patriarchs Carlos and Helio Gracie, played a pivotal role in not only popularizing the Vale Tudo style of Martial Arts but also revolutionizing Combat Sports with the creation of mixed martial arts (MMA).

During the early 20th century, the Gracies introduced a unique combination of Jiu-Jitsu with elements of Judo, wrestling, and boxing into their fighting style. This fusion of techniques formed the foundation of Vale Tudo, which translates to "anything goes" in Portuguese. The birth of this no-holds-barred fighting style marked a radical departure from conventional martial arts competitions and laid the groundwork for modern-day MMA.

The Gracie family's influence and dominance in Combat Sports matches are unparalleled. Their innovative approach to combat involved utilizing leverage, superior positioning, and ground fighting techniques to overcome larger and stronger opponents. This strategic approach, known as "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu," revolutionized the way martial arts were perceived, emphasizing skill and technique over sheer physical strength.

The Gracies' success in Vale Tudo competitions, which they frequently organized and participated in, further popularized the sport across Brazil and eventually the world. Carlos and Helio Gracie's sons, including, Carlson, Robson, Rickson and Rolls Gracie, continued the family legacy, perpetuating their father's teachings and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of martial arts.

The growing popularity of Vale Tudo was the driving force needed for the family to create the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the early 1990s, a global MMA promotion that showcased various fighting styles fighting against each other with the intention of proving to everyone the effectiveness of the family's Jiu-Jitsu above any other styles.  The Gracie family's involvement in the UFC, particularly through their dominant performances inside the cage, brought unprecedented attention to the art of Jiu-Jitsu and propelled the sport to new heights.

Today, the Gracie family's contribution to the world of martial arts and their impact on Vale Tudo and MMA cannot be overstated. Their tireless dedication to perfecting the art of ground fighting, along with their ability to adapt and innovate, has forever changed the landscape of combat sports. The birth of Vale Tudo, closely intertwined with the emergence of the Gracies, not only revolutionized fighting techniques but also instilled a philosophy that transcends the octagon – skill, strategy, and discipline triumph over brute force.
